A Midsummer Night's Dream

William Shakespeare

22nd-25th July 1998

The performances were a great success, prompting some of our audiences to write in with a letter of thanks. Here is one example we were particularly pleased to receive.

About The Play

People who go and see a Shakespeare play quite often turn to each other in the interval and say, "I wish it was A Midsummer Night's Dream." Well this year it is!

The Dream has universal appeal to actors and audience alike.
There are the Fairies; Titania and Oberon and meddling in the affairs of both, is the malevolent Puck.
There are the mechanicals; good, honest, hardworking craftsmen - thrilled at the prospect "of performing a play for great Theseus' Wedding Day".
The third story is one of love. Hermia is to marry Demetrius, but Hermia loves Lysander. Lysander loves Hermia, but so does Demetrius. Helena loves Demetrius but nobody loves Helena (though Hermia is her friend). Then they all go into the forest where magic and mayhem meet.

The Setting

Ridgeway school is a converted Edwardian country home set in several acres of beautiful grounds. Maidenhead Drama Guild are grateful to the Principals, by whose kind permission Ridgeway provides a tranquil and elegant setting for our play.
